Private Practice

An out and out medical drama created for the television, Private Practice is a wonderful spin off on another successful medical drama- Grey’s Anatomy. The story unfolds as the Dr. Addison Montgomery decides to go into private practice in the city of Los Angeles. The audience remain enthralled as they watch the daily trials and tribulations of a doctor. Setting up a private practice comes with problems of its own and as each character tries to grapple with their difficulties, the series tries to make the audience aware of the fact that a doctor is a human being too.

Shonda Rhimes is the creator of the show and also srves as its executive producer. She is joined by Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Mark Tinker and Marti Noxon in her endeavors. The show premiered on ABC in 2007. After running successfully for a couple of seasons, Private Practice is now all set to return to television for yet another season.

Origin of Private Practice

The series is a total spin off on Grey’s Anatomy where Kate Walsh playing Addison Montgomery is seen leaving the hospital for an wellness clinic based in Los Angeles. An extended broadcast of the popular series Grey’s Anatomy was utilised to make the audience get familiar with the idea behind the series. Private Practice characters were introduced in the back door pilot episode well entrenched within the double episode of the Grey Anatomy itself. This particular episode enjoyed a spectacular rating and was watched by over 2 million people as it went on air. Television serial audience tuned in to watch the premiere of Private Practice on September 26, 2007 and the show went on to become the most watched show in that time slot.

Character Casting of Private Practice

There has been a lot of change in characters of Private Practice. Naomi Bennett, played by Merrin Dungey was taken over by Audra McDonald. ABC did not give any reason for the abrupt change. A totally new character played by KaDee Strickland, was added to the cast after the medical drama, Private Practice went on air. The series also has numerous guest actors making their appearance within the show. This is a fairly frequent occurrence and Idina Menzel, the Tony award winner was also seen in a couple of episodes during the second season of Private Practice. Most of the main characters of Private Practice, however, remain the same as that of Grey’s anatomy.

Awards won by Private Practice

The series has managed get a good review and have also won a few awards. Taye Diggs and Audra Audra McDonald playing Dr. Sam Bennett and Dr. Naomi Bennett respectively were both nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actor/Actress in a Drama Series by the NAACP Image Awards in 2008. Taye Diggs went on to win the award the very next year. Shonda Rhimes was also nominated in the outstanding writer category. 2008 also saw this popular tele series being nominated as a favorite new TV drama by the people’s choice awards. BMI TV music award was won by Chad Fischer, Tim Bright, for creating the music for Private Practice.
